I have taken the course of Professor Sergey V. Ryazantsev, “international migration and labour market” at the Institute for Demographic Research of the Russian Academy of Science in the first term of my second year of master’s degree of international business. I have found the course unique and interesting not only because it was the only course I have taken outside my university but also for its convenient mythology of delivery and the impact on my knowledge of the kinds and reasons for human mobility.
I have taken this course in the Institute for Demographic Research of the Russian Academy of Science located about 40 minutes away from my university- Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia(RUDN), on the Fotiyevoi street. I have found this interesting because in addition to the fresh air and beautiful building of the academy I was introduced to the course even before I started it. In its narrow sense people migrate for educational purpose- I migrated to the institute to study. Through this incident I also understood that migration is not only disadvantageous but also can be advantageous.
The method of delivery of the course was the most that I was fascinated about. Professor Sergei Ryazantsev has a unique and simple approach in delivering what was expected from the course. After lecturing the theoretical part in the first lesson, he took as to a journey of the world through his research findings; empirical approach. We witnessed all kinds of people (demography) migrate through live pictures, documents (migration and customs) and maps for many reasons called the types of labour migration. I make sense of the adage “one picture speaks more than thousand words. In addition to this the professor invited three guest lecturers to present their research findings on the subject to drive the concept home.
